What this is

A secure Year 10 response, annotated to show which success criterion each part meets. It is also your answer key. Best value: posters £32.00 (pack of 50), leaflets £30.00 (Print Cwm), venue £70.00 (Canolfan Gymunedol). Full budget: £483.30. The limit is £500 − £50 = £450.00, so the budget is £33.30 over. Any cut that saves at least £33.30 is correct; three good options are shown below.

Step 2: best value

ItemOption 1Option 2Best value
40 postersPrint Cwm: 40 × £0.85 = £34.00Siop Argraffu: 1 pack of 50 = £32.00Siop Argraffu, £32.00. Cheaper by £2.00, with 10 spare.
500 leafletsPrint Cwm: 500 × £0.06 = £30.00Siop Argraffu: 2 packs × £22.00 = £44.00Print Cwm, £30.00
VenueNeuadd y Dref: 4 × £18.00 = £72.00Canolfan: £55.00 + £15.00 = £70.00Canolfan, £70.00

The pupil buys whole packs, adds the cleaning fee, and notices that the pack price wins even though it gives more posters than needed. Evidences criterion 1.

Step 3: other costs

ItemWorkingCost
Refreshments70 × £1.50£105.00
BannerVAT: 10% of £48 = £4.80, so 20% = £9.60. £48.00 + £9.60£57.60
Speaker travel23 × 2 = 46 miles. 46 × £0.45£20.70
Badges100 × £0.38£38.00
Adverts14 × £5.00£70.00
Photo boothFixed price£60.00

The pupil remembers the return journey for the speaker and shows the VAT step by step. Evidences criterion 2.

Step 4: the budget

ItemCost (£)
Posters32.00
Leaflets30.00
Venue70.00
Refreshments105.00
Banner (including VAT)57.60
Speaker travel20.70
Badges38.00
Adverts70.00
Photo booth60.00
Total483.30

Every value has 2 decimal places and the total is correct. Evidences criterion 3.

Step 5: the 10% rule

(a) 10% of £500 = £50.00 contingency. Most the forum can spend: £500.00 − £50.00 = £450.00.

(b) No. £483.30 − £450.00 = £33.30 over.

(c) I would run the adverts for 7 days instead of 14. That costs 7 × £5.00 = £35.00, saving £35.00. New total: £483.30 − £35.00 = £448.30, which is £1.70 under the limit.

Other correct cuts: remove the badges (saves £38.00, total £445.30), or remove the photo booth (saves £60.00, total £423.30).

The pupil finds the limit, works out the gap and chooses a cut that closes it with money to spare, and checks the new total. Evidences criterion 4.

Step 6: publicity as a percentage

Publicity with 7 days of adverts: £32.00 + £30.00 + £57.60 + £38.00 + £35.00 = £192.60. £192.60 ÷ £500 × 100 = 38.5% of the grant.

If the badges were cut instead: £189.60, which is 37.9%. If the photo booth were cut instead: £227.60, which is 45.5%.

The percentage is of the whole grant, as the question asks. Evidences criterion 3.

Step 7: justification

We compared two suppliers for printing and two venues, and chose the lowest total cost each time, which saved £18.00 compared with the dearer options. We cut the social media adverts from 14 days to 7, because most people decide to come in the last week and our posters, leaflets and speaker still reach young carers directly. We have kept £51.70 unspent, which is more than the £50.00 contingency the grant requires.

Three clear sentences for the council, each with a figure. Savings: £2.00 on posters, £14.00 on leaflets and £2.00 on the venue make £18.00. Unspent: £500.00 − £448.30 = £51.70. Evidences criterion 5.
