Labelling a Welsh landscape picture

LNF: Literacy → Writing → Vocabulary, spelling, grammar

What this is

A finished Year 2 activity page, as a secure pupil might complete it, with notes on what to look for. It is also the answer key. The pupil’s writing is shown in blue. Task 1: 1 mountain, 2 lake, 3 river, 4 forest, 5 village, 6 bridge, 7 beach, 8 sea. Task 2: natural: mountain, river, forest, beach; made by people: village, bridge. Task 3: mountain 2, lake 1, river 2, forest 2, village 2, beach 1, bridge 1, sea 1. Tasks 4 and 5 have more than one right answer.

Task 1: Label the picture.

1mountain
5village
2lake
6bridge
3river
7beach
4forest
8sea

Look for: each word copied letter by letter from the word bank, on the line with the matching number, with lower-case letters formed correctly and the tall letters (t, k, l, b, h, d) taller than the others. Common slips: montain, forist, vilage, brige. A pupil who mixes up 2 and 8 (lake and sea) needs the reminder: a lake has land all the way round it.

Task 2: Natural or made by people?

Word natural made by people
mountain
village
river
bridge
forest
beach

Look for: village and bridge are made by people; everything else is natural. Some pupils say the forest was planted by people. In Eryri some forests were planted, so accept it if the pupil can explain; the expected answer is natural.

Task 3: Clap the word. How many claps?

mountain2lake1
river2forest2
village2beach1
bridge1sea1

Look for: 2 claps for the longer words (moun/tain, ri/ver, for/est, vil/lage). Pupils who split a word into syllables can spell it in parts, which is the spelling strategy this task practises.

Task 4: Choose a describing word.

The mountain is tall and rocky .

The lake is calm .

The river is long and wiggly .

The forest is dark .

The beach is sandy .

Look for: describing words that match the picture. Also correct: the lake is blue or small; the forest is green; the mountain is tall and grey (not in the box, but a good own choice). Not correct: the river is sandy, the beach is tall.

Task 5: Write 2 sentences about the picture.

The tall mountain has snow on the top.
A long river goes under the old bridge to the sea.

Look for: a capital letter at the start and a full stop at the end of each sentence, spaces between words, at least 1 describing word in each sentence (tall, long, old), and geography words from Task 1 spelt correctly. A Year 2 pupil working at the expected level may write a shorter sentence such as “The beach is sandy.”; that is fine if it is punctuated and spelt correctly.

Welsh words from Step 2

mynydd = mountain · llyn = lake · afon = river. Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is the highest mountain in Wales, 1,085 metres high. Eryri is the Welsh name for Snowdonia.
