Reading the clock in a Victorian school day

LNF: Numeracy → Learning about geometry helps us understand shape, space and position, and learning about measurement helps us quantify in the real world → Measurement

What this is

A secure Year 3 response, annotated so you can see which success criterion each part meets. It is also the answer key. Clocks: A 2:15, B 8:45, C 10:30, D 12:00, E 9:15, F 4:00. Order: B, E, C, D, A, F. How long: 1 hour, 1 and a half hours, 2 and a half hours, 1 hour. The school, timetable, notebook and log book are invented. Step 5 answers will be different for every school; the ones here are only an example.

Step 1: read the clocks

ClockEventTime in wordsDigital time
ANeedlework and drawingquarter past 22:15
BThe bell rings. Line up in the yard.quarter to 98:45
CDrill exercises in the yardhalf past 1010:30
DWalk home for dinner12 o’clock12:00
ESay the times tables out loudquarter past 99:15
FSchool ends. Walk home.4 o’clock4:00

Every time is read and written 2 ways. On clock B the short hand is nearly at 9, so it is quarter to 9, not quarter past 8. Watch for this mistake. Evidences criteria 1 and 2.

Step 2: put the day in order

Time in wordsDigitalWhat happensClock
quarter to 98:45The bell rings. Line up in the yard.B
9 o’clock9:00Register and a prayerno clock
quarter past 99:15Say the times tables out loudE
10 o’clock10:00Writing on slates with slate pencilsno clock
half past 1010:30Drill exercises in the yardC
11 o’clock11:00Copying sums from the blackboardno clock
12 o’clock12:00Walk home for dinnerD
half past 11:30Back to school. Reading out loud.no clock
quarter past 22:15Needlework and drawingA
4 o’clock4:00School ends. Walk home.F

The pupil’s rows are in bold. Needlework (2:15) goes after 1:30 because the afternoon numbers start again after 12. Evidences criteria 2 and 3.

Step 3: draw the hands

(a) quarter past 1
Answer clock showing quarter past 1123456789101112
Digital: 1:15
(b) half past 11
Answer clock showing half past 11123456789101112
Digital: 11:30
(c) 3 o’clock
Answer clock showing 3 o'clock123456789101112
Digital: 3:00
(d) quarter to 4
Answer clock showing quarter to 4123456789101112
Digital: 3:45

(a) Long hand on 3, short hand just past 1. (b) Long hand on 6, short hand halfway between 11 and 12. (c) Long hand on 12, short hand on 3. (d) Long hand on 9, short hand nearly at 4.

The long hand is clearly longer. The short hand is between 2 numbers for quarter past, half past and quarter to. A short hand pointing exactly at 4 for quarter to 4 is a common mistake. Evidences criteria 1, 2 and 4.

Step 4: how long?

(a) 9 o’clock to 10 o’clock is 1 hour.

(b) 12 o’clock to 1 o’clock is 1 hour. 1 o’clock to half past 1 is half an hour. Total 1 and a half hours.

(c) Half past 1 to half past 3 is 2 hours. Half past 3 to 4 o’clock is half an hour. Total 2 and a half hours.

(d) 11 o’clock to 12 o’clock is 1 hour.

Challenge: 9 o’clock to 4 o’clock is 7 hours (count the big jumps: 10, 11, 12, 1, 2, 3, 4). Take away 1 and a half hours for dinner: 5 and a half hours of lessons.

The pupil counts in hours, then adds the half hour. Counting jumps on the time line avoids getting stuck at 12. Evidences criterion 5.

Step 5: your school day today

EventCwm Derwen, 1895 (invented)My school today (example)
School starts9 o’clock (9:00)quarter to 9 (8:45)
Playtimehalf past 10 (10:30)quarter past 10 (10:15)
Dinner12 o’clock (12:00)12 o’clock (12:00)
Home time4 o’clock (4:00)half past 3 (3:30)

Same: We both have dinner at 12 o’clock.

Different: We eat dinner in school, but the Victorian children walked home for dinner. We go home half an hour earlier.

Times are written in words and in digital. The pupil gives 1 clear same and 1 clear different, using the times. Answers will vary with each school. Evidences criteria 2 and 5.

Step 6: the week and the seasons

(a) Monday to Friday is 5 days. They were not at school on Saturday and Sunday.

Log book lineSeason
“Very cold. Snow on the mountain. The stove is lit all day.”winter
“New lambs in the fields next to the school.”spring
“Hot and sunny. All the windows are open.”summer
“Brown leaves are falling into the yard.”autumn

The days of the week and the seasons are named correctly, with a clue from each line. Evidences criterion 6.

If you finish early: answers

Half an hour after quarter past 2: quarter to 3, which is 2:45.

The bell: quarter to 9 is before 9 o’clock, by 15 minutes (a quarter of an hour).

Favourite time: answers will vary. Check that the hands match the words and the digital time.
