The common frog is an amphibian: it lives both in water and on land. It has smooth, damp skin and long back legs for jumping. Adults are usually 6 to 9 cm long and olive green or brown with dark patches. Common frogs live all over Wales, in gardens, fields and woods near ponds.
In Wales, common frogs usually lay their spawn in February and March, in ponds and shallow water. One female can lay 1,000 to 2,000 eggs in a big clump. Each egg is a black dot inside a ball of clear jelly. (Toads lay their eggs in long strings instead.)
The eggs hatch into tadpoles after about 1 to 3 weeks. They hatch faster in warmer water. At first, tadpoles eat algae; later they also eat tiny animals. After about 6 to 9 weeks the back legs grow. The front legs follow a few weeks later.
The tail slowly shrinks and the tadpole starts to breathe air. It is now a froglet, only about 1 cm long. Froglets leave the water about 12 to 16 weeks after the eggs were laid, usually in June or July.
A froglet takes about 2 to 3 years to become an adult that can lay spawn. Fish, newts, birds and water beetles eat many eggs and tadpoles, which is why a frog lays so many.
From about October to February, frogs hibernate. They rest in compost heaps, under logs and stones, or in the mud at the bottom of a pond.

Hi everyone!! Today it’s FROGS!!! My cousin knows loads about frogs so this is all true.
Frogs are reptiles, like snakes. Frogs lay their eggs in long strings. The frogspawn hatches into tadpoles. Tadpoles turn into frogs in just 2 weeks!!! Then they hop off and that’s it.
