lnf.cymru stimulus sheet · Humanities · Year 1
Elin is an invented girl, made up for this lesson. Bangor is a real city in North Wales. The pictures are simple drawings.
Print the 5 picture cards and the age cards, one set for the class, and cut along the dashed lines. Peg or stick the age cards 0 to 6 in a line across the board, 0 on the left, with a gap between each. Read Elin’s story below, holding up each card as you read it, then mix the cards up and ask pupils to peg each one above its age. The correct order is: baby (0), first steps (1), balance bike (3), starting school (4), Elin now (6). There are no pictures for ages 2 and 5.
Card 1, age 0: “Elin was born in Bangor. She was a tiny baby. She slept a lot and drank lots of milk.”
Card 2, age 1: “When Elin was 1, she took her first steps. She wobbled, and her grown-up held out their hands to help her.”
Card 3, age 3: “When Elin was 3, she rode a balance bike. A balance bike has no pedals, so she pushed along with her feet.”
Card 4, age 4: “When Elin was 4, she started school in the Reception class. She had a new school bag.”
Card 5, age 6: “Now Elin is 6 and in Year 1. Last week, one of her front teeth came out. A new, bigger tooth will grow in its place.”
