Machynlleth market: price cards and paper coins

The Wednesday market in Machynlleth, Powys, is real. Siân, her stall and all her prices are invented. The paper coins are simple drawings of real UK coins, not actual size.

For the cover teacher

Print page 1 (price cards and stall sign) and page 2 (paper coins), one of each per pair, and cut along the dashed lines. Each pair gets 28 coins: £1 × 2, 50p × 2, 20p × 4, 10p × 6, 5p × 4, 2p × 4, 1p × 6 (£4.74 altogether). For the role play, the buyer starts with a purse of £1, 50p, 20p and 10p (£1.80). The seller keeps every other coin as the till, so there is always enough to give change. Swap jobs halfway. Real or plastic coins work just as well.

Welsh words on the sign: stondin means stall; picau ar y maen means Welsh cakes; diolch means thank you.
