Roald Dahl was born on 13 September 1916 in Llandaff, Cardiff. His parents, Harald and Sofie, came from Norway. His father ran a successful shipping business in Cardiff, which at that time was one of the busiest coal ports in the world. Roald was christened at the Norwegian Church in Cardiff.
Sadly, his father died in 1920, when Roald was only 3 years old. From 1923, Roald went to the Cathedral School in Llandaff. Near the school was a sweet shop. Roald and his friends played a trick on the shopkeeper by hiding a dead mouse in a jar of gobstoppers. Roald called this “the Great Mouse Plot” and wrote about it many years later in his book Boy (1984).
When he was 9, Roald was sent to a boarding school in England. He grew up to become one of the world’s best-loved children’s authors, writing books such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964), The BFG (1982) and Matilda (1988). He died in 1990.
Today, a large open space in Cardiff Bay is called Roald Dahl Plass. Plass is the Norwegian word for “place”. Every year, Roald Dahl Day is celebrated on his birthday, 13 September.
