Teacher script

Read the words after Say aloud.

  1. 5 min Healthy food. Say: “Today we are going to listen very carefully to the sounds in words for healthy food. Fruit, vegetables, milk and water help us grow strong.” Ask: “What is your favourite fruit?”
  2. 8 min I spy a sound. Say: “I spy, with my little eye, a fruit beginning with b.” (banana) Then: “a vegetable beginning with c” (carrot), “a drink beginning with m” (milk). Let a few pupils have a turn at saying “I spy”.
  3. 12 min Task 1: first sounds. Hand out the activity sheet. Say: “Point to the first picture. It is an apple. Say it slowly with me: a, a, apple. What sound does it start with? Circle a.” Then say each word slowly, stretching the first sound: banana, carrot, egg, milk, pear, sweetcorn, tomato. Give time to circle after each one.
  4. 8 min Task 2: join to the letter. Say: “These are grapes, water, an orange and a strawberry. Say each word. Draw a line from the picture to the letter it starts with.”
  5. 15 min Task 3: sound talk. Say: “I will say some sounds. You blend them together to make a word. c, u, p.” Pupils say “cup!” Say: “Find the cup. Write one sound in each box: c, u, p.” Do the same with j, u, g (jug), f, i, g (fig) and b, u, n (bun). Pupils who finish can write the whole word at the end of the row.
  6. 9 min Task 4: rhyme time. Say: “Words that rhyme sound the same at the end, like cat and hat. Pear rhymes with… chair! Join them with a line.” Read the other words aloud and let pupils join them.
  7. 3 min Silly snacks. Say: “Let’s make silly snacks where every word starts with the same sound: big brown bananas, tiny tasty tomatoes.” Ask pupils to make one up.
