What this practises: money. Pupils put coins and prices in order, make the same amount with different coins, add up orders, find change by counting on along a number line, and give change in the fewest coins. Everything is set at an invented school summer fair.

Print: this sheet, one per pupil, and the stimulus sheet “Ysgol Bryn Celyn summer fair: the Welsh cake stall”, one between two. No computers are needed. No real money is needed. Play coins are optional; some pupils find them helpful.

Run: 5 min read the stimulus sheet aloud · 7 min Step 1 · 7 min Step 2 · 8 min Step 3 · 12 min Step 4 · 7 min Step 5 · 9 min Step 6. Total 55 minutes. Before Step 4, go through the number line example with the class.

Collect: this sheet. Quick checks: coins in order 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2. Step 3 totals: Cerys 55p, Osian 80p, Mali £1.05, Dewi £1.35. Step 4 change: 15p, 45p, 20p, 95p, 65p. The worked example has every answer.

What you are doing

You are a helper on the Welsh cake stall at the Ysgol Bryn Celyn summer fair. Customers buy cakes and drinks. You need to add up what they buy, take their money and give them the right change. Look at the stimulus sheet for the prices and the coins.

Step 1: put them in order

(a) Look at the coins on the stimulus sheet. Write them in order of value. Start with the coin that is worth the least.

LeastMost

(b) The 2p coin is bigger than the 5p coin. Which one is worth more? ______________

(c) Write the 9 things on the price board in order. Start with the cheapest.

OrderItemPrice

2nd
3rd
4th
5th
6th
7th
8th
9th

(d) Write < (less than) or > (more than) in each box.

Slice of bara brith (45p)Cupcake (40p)
Bag of 4 Welsh cakes (£1.10)Jar of strawberry jam (£1.50)
Whole bara brith loaf (£3.75)Jar of strawberry jam (£1.50)

(e) Iolo says, “The jam costs less than the flapjack, because 1 is less than 35.” Is Iolo right? Explain.

Step 2: the same amount, 2 ways

Pay for each item in 2 different ways. Draw the coins as circles with the value inside, or write them like this: 20p + 10p.

ItemWay 1Way 2
Welsh cake (30p)
Cup of lemonade (25p)
Slice of bara brith (45p)
Bag of 4 Welsh cakes (£1.10)

Look at your 2 ways for the bara brith. Which way uses fewer coins? ______________

Step 3: add up the orders

Add up each order. Show your working. Remember 100p = £1, so 120p = £1.20.

CustomerOrderWorkingTotal
CerysWelsh cake, cup of lemonade
OsianCupcake, apple, cup of lemonade
MaliSlice of bara brith, 2 Welsh cakes
DewiBag of 4 Welsh cakes, cup of lemonade

Step 4: give the change

To find the change, count on from the price to the money paid. Jump to the next 10 first, then jump in bigger steps.

Example: Nia buys an apple for 15p. She pays with a 50p coin.

Number line from 15p to 50p: a jump of 5p from 15p to 20p, then a jump of 30p from 20p to 50p 15p 20p 50p 5p 30p

15p to 20p is 5p. 20p to 50p is 30p. 5p + 30p = 35p. Nia gets 35p change. “Diolch!”

Now do these. Draw your jumps on each number line.

(a) Rhys buys a flapjack (35p). He pays with a 50p coin.

Change = ______________

(b) Cerys’s order costs 55p. She pays with a £1 coin.

Change = ______________

(c) Osian’s order costs 80p. He pays with a £1 coin.

An empty number line for question (c)

Change = ______________

(d) Mali’s order costs £1.05. She pays with a £2 coin. Tip: £1.05 is 105p and £2 is 200p.

An empty number line for question (d)

Change = ______________

(e) Dewi’s order costs £1.35. He pays with a £2 coin.

An empty number line for question (e)

Change = ______________

Step 5: change in the fewest coins

The stall rule says: give change in the fewest coins. Start with the biggest coin you can.

ChangeCoinsNumber of coins
15p
45p
20p
95p
65p

Think: Tomos gave 45p change as 10p, 10p, 20p, 5p. That is 4 coins. Is it the right amount? Could he use fewer coins? How?

Step 6: what can I buy with £1?

(a) Elin has £1. She wants a cupcake, a slice of bara brith and a cup of lemonade. Does she have enough money? Show how you know.

(b) Gethin has £1. How many single Welsh cakes can he buy? How much change does he get?

(c) Now you have £1. Choose at least 2 things from the price board. Fill in the table.
