What this practises: adding and subtracting money with correct notation, working out the price of one item to compare value, deciding what can be bought within a budget, and dividing a total fairly. The picnic must be balanced across the food groups of the NHS Eatwell Guide.

Print: this sheet, one per pupil, and the stimulus sheet “Harbour Street Shop: picnic price list”, one between two. No computers are needed. Calculators are optional: pupils should show written or mental working first and may use a calculator to check.

Run: 5 min read the stimulus sheet aloud · 10 min Step 1 · 10 min Step 2 · 15 min Step 3 · 8 min Step 4 · 8 min Step 5. Total 56 minutes.

Collect: this sheet. Quick checks: rolls 25p and 20p each; apples 25p in a bag, 30p single; water 30p in a pack, 65p single; Ffion’s basket £11.35, which is £1.35 over; Ffion is missing vegetables and dairy. Step 3 baskets vary: check the total, the change and the four food groups.

What you are doing

Four friends have £10.00 for a beach picnic. You will compare prices to find the best buys, check a basket that went wrong, plan your own healthy picnic within the budget, and work out the cost for each person.

Step 1: best value

Work out the price of one item in each pack. Then decide which is the best buy for 4 friends.

ItemPrice of oneCost to get what 4 friends need
Rolls, pack of 4 for £1.00
Rolls, pack of 8 for £1.60
Apples, bag of 6 for £1.50
Apple, single for £0.30£0.30
Water, 6 bottles for £1.80
Water, single for £0.65£0.65

For which item is the cheaper price for one not the cheapest way to buy what you need? Explain.

Step 2: check Ffion’s basket

(a) Find the prices of Ffion’s 6 items. Add them in a column, lining up the decimal points.

(b) Is Ffion within the budget? By how much is she over or under £10.00?

(c) Which food groups are missing? Which items break the rules?

(d) Suggest swaps to make Ffion’s basket healthy and within £10.00. Find the new total.

Step 3: plan your picnic

Choose items for 4 friends. Follow all three rules on the stimulus sheet.

Step 4: fair shares

(a) The friends share the cost equally. How much does each person pay? Give your answer to the nearest penny.

(b) If there is money left, can you afford a treat? Which one, and what would the new total be?

Step 5: explain your choices

Write 3 sentences to persuade the parents that your picnic is healthy and good value. Use numbers from your plan.
