Planning the times for a class concert

LNF: Numeracy → Geometry and measurement → Measurement

Name: Class: Date:

Cover teacher: you need no subject knowledge

What this practises: telling the time to o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to on clocks with hands and on 12-hour digital clocks, using before and after, and getting a sense of how long things take. The context is music and drama: an invented Year 2 class at the invented Ysgol y Felin is planning an afternoon concert, and pupils work out the running order (which act goes on when).

Print: this sheet, one per pupil. You read Part 1 aloud; pupils only need Part 2 (the activity pages). Pencils and coloured pencils. No computers are needed. You need a board to draw one big clock on.

Run: 5 min hand out and set up · 15 min Step 1, the arm clock · 10 min Step 2, Task 1, read the concert clocks · 10 min Step 3, Tasks 2 and 3, running order, before and after · 10 min Step 4, Task 4, draw the hands and match the digital clocks · 5 min Step 5, Task 5, how long · 5 min Step 6, Task 6, my act and share. Total 60 minutes.

Collect: the activity pages. The numeracy (measurement) evidence is Task 1 (times written under 6 clocks), Task 2 (acts numbered 1 to 6), Task 4 (hands drawn on 3 clocks, digital clocks matched) and Task 5 (sensible times circled). Quick checks: Task 1, left to right, top row then bottom row: half past 1, quarter past 2, 1 o’clock, quarter to 2, quarter past 1, 2 o’clock. Task 2: 3, 6, 1, 4, 2, 5. Task 3: recorder group, harp and drums, dragon dance. Task 4: 1:30 joins the bottom clock, 2:15 joins the top clock. Task 5: about 3 minutes and about 1 and a half hours.

Part 1: teacher script

Read the words in the green boxes aloud. Draw one big clock on the board before you start.

5 min Set up

Hand out the activity pages and pencils. Draw a big circle on the board. Write 12 at the top, 6 at the bottom, 3 on the right and 9 on the left, then fill in the other numbers. Pupils will stand facing the board later, so stand beside the clock, not in front of it.

15 min Step 1: the arm clock

Say: “Today we are planning a class concert. A concert needs a plan, so everyone knows when to go on stage. To make the plan, we need to read the clock.”

Show: draw a short hand pointing at 1 and a long hand pointing at 12. Say: “A clock has 2 hands. The long hand is the minute hand. The short hand is the hour hand. When the long hand points straight up to 12, we say o’clock. The short hand points to 1, so this is 1 o’clock.”

Do: ask pupils to stand, face the board and point one arm straight up. Say: “Your arm is the long hand. Straight up is o’clock.”

Say: “Now the long hand goes round, the same way as the clock. Move your arm slowly to the side, then down. Stop when it points straight down to 6. The long hand has gone halfway round. We call this half past.”

Show: rub out and draw half past 1: long hand on 6, short hand halfway between 1 and 2. Say: “Look, the short hand moves too, but very slowly. At half past 1 it is halfway to 2.”

Do: “Arms up again, o’clock. Now move only a little way round and point out to the side, to the 3. The long hand has gone a quarter of the way round. We call this quarter past.” Draw quarter past 1: long hand on 3, short hand just past 1, a quarter of the way to 2.

Do: “Keep going round, past 6, and point out to the other side, to the 9. Now there is only a quarter left to go before the next o’clock. We call this quarter to.” Draw quarter to 2: long hand on 9, short hand nearly at 2, three quarters of the way from 1 to 2.

Ask: “The short hand is between 1 and 2, nearly at 2. Is it quarter to 1 or quarter to 2?” (quarter to 2) Say: “Quarter to means we are going to the next number. It will soon be 2 o’clock.”

Do: play the arm clock game. Call out “o’clock”, “half past”, “quarter past”, “quarter to” in a mixed order and pupils point their arm. Then you point your arm (stand facing the board like the pupils) and they call out the name.

Show: write 1:30 on the board. Say: “A digital clock shows numbers, not hands. The first number is the hour. After the dots, 00 means o’clock, 15 means quarter past, 30 means half past and 45 means quarter to the next hour. So 1:30 is half past 1.” Ask: “What is 2:15?” (quarter past 2)

10 min Step 2: Task 1, read the concert clocks

Say: “Sit down and look at Task 1. This is a pretend class at a pretend school called Ysgol y Felin. They have 6 acts in their concert: a dragon dance, a goodbye song, a welcome song, a poem in Welsh and English, a recorder group, and the harp and drums. The clocks show when each act starts, but they are all mixed up.”

Say: “Put your finger on the first clock, the dragon dance. Where is the long hand?” (on the 6) “So it is half past. Where is the short hand?” (halfway between 1 and 2) “So it is half past 1. Write half past 1 on the line. The words you need are in the word box.”

Say: “Now do the other 5 clocks. Long hand first: o’clock, half past, quarter past or quarter to? Then the short hand: which number?”

Walk round. If a pupil writes “quarter to 1” for the poem, ask them to put a finger on the short hand: “Which number is it nearly at?” (2)

10 min Step 3: Tasks 2 and 3, running order, before and after

Say: “A concert plan is called a running order. The act with the earliest time goes first. Which act starts at 1 o’clock?” (the welcome song) “In Task 2, write 1 in the box under the welcome song.”

Say: “What comes next? Quarter past 1, then half past 1, then quarter to 2, then 2 o’clock, then quarter past 2. Use your times from Task 1. Number the acts 1 to 6.” Count with the class in Welsh at the end: “un, dau, tri, pedwar, pump, chwech” (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).

Say: “Task 3. I will read each question. Circle the right picture.” Read: “What comes just before the dragon dance?” · “What comes just after the poem?” · “What comes just before the poem?” Show before and after with your Task 2 numbers: “The dragon dance is number 3. Just before 3 is 2.”

10 min Step 4: Task 4, draw the hands and match the digital clocks

Say: “On the day of the concert there are other times too. Draw the hands on the 3 empty clocks. Draw the long hand first. Then think: is the short hand on a number, or between two numbers?”

Read the 3 times aloud: “Practice, 11 o’clock. Lunch, half past 12. Tidy up, quarter to 3.” Do: draw half past 12 on the board after pupils have tried, so they can check the short hand is halfway between 12 and 1.

Say: “Now look at the 2 digital clocks. Draw a line from each digital clock to the clock with hands that shows the same time. One clock with hands will be left over.”

5 min Step 5: Task 5, how long

Ask: “How long does one song take? Let’s hum a song we know.” Hum the first part of a song the class knows together. “Was that a few minutes or a few hours?” (minutes)

Say: “The concert starts at 1 o’clock and ends at half past 2. From 1 o’clock to 2 o’clock is 1 hour. Then half an hour more. In Task 5, circle the sensible time for one song and for the whole concert.”

5 min Step 6: Task 6, my act and share

Say: “The class wants one more act, just after the goodbye song, at half past 2. What would you do? Sing, dance, play a drum, act a story? Draw your act in the box. Then draw the hands for half past 2 on the clock.”

Ask 2 or 3 pupils to show their act and their clock. Ask: “Where is the long hand? Where is the short hand?” (long hand on 6, short hand halfway between 2 and 3) Say: “Da iawn, everyone! (Well done!)”
