Putting your name on your art

DCF: Citizenship → Digital rights, licensing and ownership

Also assessed, LNF: Literacy → Writing → Vocabulary, spelling, grammar

Name: Class: Date:

Cover teacher: you need no subject knowledge

What this practises: knowing that a picture belongs to the person who made it, and putting your own name on your work, just as pupils will on a computer or tablet later. Pupils look at a pretend online class gallery, match pictures to the pupils who made them, decide what to do about a picture with no name, then make their own picture on a pretend paint app and add their name and a title. The name, the title and the traced and copied words are also literacy work: forming letters, a capital letter at the start of a name, and copying words.

Print: this sheet, one per pupil. You read Part 1 aloud; pupils only need Part 2 (the activity pages). Also print the stimulus sheet Our art gallery (ysgol-y-felin-online-art-gallery), as big as you can (A3 is best) or 1 copy for each table. Pencils and coloured pencils. No computers are needed. The web page and the paint app are pretend screens on paper.

Run: 5 min hand out and set up · 10 min Step 1, our art gallery · 10 min Step 2, Task 1, whose is it? · 5 min Step 3, Task 2, the picture with no name · 15 min Step 4, Task 3, my picture, my name, my title · 10 min Step 5, Task 4, trace and copy · 5 min Step 6, Task 5, partner check and share. Total 60 minutes.

Collect: the activity pages. The literacy evidence is Task 3 (the pupil’s own name, with a capital first letter then lower-case letters, and the title My ___ with a word copied from the word bank) and Task 4 (the traced and copied words by me and My name: letters formed, sitting on the line, written left to right). Quick checks: Task 1: the dragon is Cerys’s, the castle is Tomos’s, the sheep is Osian’s. Task 2: tick Ask who made it and Ask the teacher; cross Say I made it.

Part 1: teacher script

Read the words in the green boxes aloud. Show the stimulus sheet Our art gallery, or hold up the activity pages.

5 min Set up

Hand out the activity pages, pencils and coloured pencils. Put the gallery stimulus sheet where everyone can see it, or 1 on each table. Write Name and My on the board in big letters.

10 min Step 1: our art gallery

Say: “Look at this. It is a pretend web page from a pretend school called Ysgol y Felin. Their class has made an online art gallery. A gallery is a place where we show pictures.”

Show: point to the top bar. Say: “This is the web address, like the address of a house, but for a web page. The big words say Our art gallery.”

Do: point to each painting and read the name under it together: “The red dragon. Who made it? Cerys.” Then the daffodil (Lili), the castle (Tomos), the sheep (Osian) and the boat at the seaside (Amir).

Say: “Every picture belongs to the person who made it. The dragon is Cerys’s picture. It is not mine and it is not yours. Cerys put her name on it, so everyone knows who made it.”

Ask: “Why is it good to put your name on your picture?” (so people know who made it; so it does not get lost; so you get the thank you) Say: “When we make a picture on a computer or a tablet, we add our name too, just like on paper.”

Ask: “Look at the rainbow. What is missing?” (the name) Say: “We will think about the rainbow soon.”

10 min Step 2: Task 1, whose is it?

Say: “Turn to Task 1. Here are 3 pictures from the gallery. Next to each picture there are 3 names. Let us read the names together.” Read each row slowly, pointing to each name: “Tomos, Cerys, Mia.”

Say: “Look at the gallery. Find the same picture. Who made it? Draw a circle round the right name.”

Walk round. If a pupil is stuck, ask them to put one finger on the picture in the gallery and one finger on the name under it, then find the name that starts with the same letter on their sheet.

Ask: “Whose is the dragon?” (Cerys) “Whose is the castle?” (Tomos) “Whose is the sheep?” (Osian) Say: “Da iawn! The name told us.”

5 min Step 3: Task 2, the picture with no name

Say: “Task 2 is the rainbow. It has no name, so we do not know who made it. I really like it. What should I do?”

Do: read the 3 choices and point to each picture: “Ask who made it. Ask the teacher. Say I made it.”

Say: “Put a tick in the box under a kind, honest choice. Put a cross in the box under the wrong choice.”

Ask: “Why is ‘Say I made it’ wrong?” (it is not true; it belongs to someone else; they would be sad) Say: “We never say someone else’s work is ours.”

15 min Step 4: Task 3, my picture, my name, my title

Say: “Task 3 is a pretend paint app, like on a tablet. Here are the colours, and here is the brush. Today your pencil is the brush. Draw your own picture in the big white space.” Pupils can choose any of the word bank pictures, or something else. Allow about 8 minutes.

Say: “Now put your name on it, so everyone knows you made it. Write your name in the Name box.”

Show: write your own name on the board. Point to the first letter. Say: “A name starts with a capital letter, a big letter. The other letters are small letters.” Pupils who know their name card can copy it from that.

Say: “Now give your picture a title. A title is the name of the picture. It starts with My. If you drew a dragon, your title is My dragon.” Point to the word bank. Say: “Find your word and copy it after My. If your word is not there, sound it out.”

10 min Step 5: Task 4, trace and copy

Say: “Artists sometimes write by me on their work. Trace the grey letters by me with your pencil. Start each letter at the top. Then copy the words on the line next to them.”

Say: “Now trace My name and copy it. Look: My has a capital M, because it is the first word.”

Walk round. Check letters sit on the line and are written from left to right. Praise a careful capital letter.

5 min Step 6: Task 5, partner check and share

Say: “Swap sheets with your partner. Look at their Task 3. Is their name on it? Tick the box. Is there a title on it? Tick the box.” If something is missing, the partner gives the sheet back so it can be added.

Do: ask 2 or 3 pupils to hold up their picture. The class reads the title and the name together, for example: “My sun, by Gwen.”

Ask: “Who does your picture belong to?” (me) “How do people know?” (my name is on it) Say: “Da iawn, everyone! (Well done!)”
