Reading a chart of screen time and active play

DCF: Citizenship → Health and well-being

Cover teacher: you need no subject knowledge

What this practises: naming the digital devices pupils use, and thinking about the good and not so good sides of screen time for well-being. Tasks 2 and 3 are real numeracy: pupils read a block chart (each square is 10 minutes), count in 10s, compare days and draw a conclusion from the chart and Seren’s feelings faces. You can mark them from the sheet.

Print: the activity sheet (page 2 of this file), one per pupil. Colour printing helps (blue for screen time, green for play); in black and white, the screen squares are darker. No computers are needed. Seren and her chart are invented. Pupils should not share their own screen time figures with the class.

Run: 5 min Step 1, our devices · 7 min Step 2, Task 1 · 8 min Step 3, how to read the chart · 15 min Step 4, Task 2 · 10 min Step 5, Task 3 · 12 min Step 6, Task 4 · 3 min Step 7, a balanced day. Total 60 minutes.

Collect: the activity sheets. Tasks 1 and 4 show the digital skill. Tasks 2 and 3 are the numeracy evidence (reading the chart, counting in 10s and drawing a conclusion). Quick checks: most screen time Friday (80 minutes), least Wednesday (30 minutes); Tuesday screen time 60 minutes; Wednesday play 70 minutes; more play than screens on Monday and Wednesday; the same on Thursday; grumpy on Tuesday and Friday, the 2 days with more screen time than play.

Teacher script

Read the words after Say aloud.

  1. 5 min Our devices. Say: “A digital device is a machine with a screen or a computer inside, like a tablet or a TV.” Ask: “What devices do people use at home or at school? What do they use them for?”
  2. 7 min Task 1: screens and devices. Say: “Circle the digital devices. A book, a ball and a bike are not digital. Tick the devices you have used. Then write what you use one of them for.”
  3. 8 min How to read the chart. Say: “This is Seren’s chart. Blue squares are screen time. Green squares are active play, like running, swimming or riding a bike. Each square is 10 minutes.” Point to Monday’s blue squares and count together in 10s: “10, 20, 30, 40. So Seren had 40 minutes of screen time on Monday.” Then count Monday’s green squares together: 60 minutes.
  4. 15 min Task 2: read Seren’s chart. Say: “Answer the questions. Use your finger to count the squares in 10s.” Read each question aloud. For e, say: “Look for days where the green column is taller than the blue one.”
  5. 10 min Task 3: how did Seren feel? Say: “Seren drew a face each evening. Which days was she grumpy? Now look back at the chart for those days. What do you notice?” Help pupils start: “On Tuesday and Friday she had more…” Say: “This is only one week for one girl, so we cannot be sure screens made her grumpy. But it is a good clue.”
  6. 12 min Task 4: good or not so good? Say: “Screens can be good for us, and too much can be not so good. Tick each sentence.” Read each one aloud. Then pupils draw one thing Seren could do instead of a screen.
  7. 3 min A balanced day. Say: “Doctors say children should aim for at least 60 minutes of active play a day. A good day has some screen time, lots of play, and a good sleep.”

I can video call Taid when he is far away.
My eyes feel tired after a long time on a screen.
I can learn with a maths game.
I stay up too late and feel sleepy at school.
I can watch a film with my family.
I forget to go outside and play.

Draw one thing Seren could do on Friday instead of a screen.
