Foundation The Sciences

Mae disgrifiad y cymhwyster yn Saesneg yn unig, gan ei fod wedi ei gymryd o fanyleb Saesneg CBAC.

Foundation The Sciences is an Entry Level and Level 1 qualification for learners in Years 10 and 11 who need a practical, accessible science course built around scientific enquiry. Literacy sits in reading test questions and secondary sources, using scientific words, planning an enquiry in simple words, and writing short conclusions, evaluations and reasoned decisions in the Unit 2 and Unit 3 tasks. Numeracy is integrated throughout, as Appendix C sets out: careful measuring, tables and bar charts, plotting two variables, means, decimals and percentages, sampling, and simple calculations such as BMI, energy efficiency and payback time. The biggest thing Key Stage 3 can build is a secure routine of measuring, recording in a table, graphing and then writing one clear sentence about what the results show.

  • Unit 2: Caring for the Planet: Non-examination assessment, four enquiry tasks of 30 minutes each plus up to one additional hour per task for data collection or data presentation, 40%, 60 marks (4 × 15); centres choose one WJEC set task for each of the four contexts; marked by the centre and moderated by WJEC
  • Unit 3: Me and My Health: Non-examination assessment, two tasks with up to 20 hours in total, 30%, 60 marks; set by WJEC, centres can tailor the practical elements; marked by the centre and moderated by WJEC

Sgiliau sy'n defnyddio Deall, ymateb a dadansoddi

  1. Reading test questions and resources

    Asesu: Yn yr arholiad

Each Unit 1 topic test uses multiple choice, matching, fill the blanks and short answer questions with resources such as graphs, diagrams and infographics. On the higher tier learners may have to select information themselves and interpret indirect information.

    Paratoi disgyblion

    Blwyddyn 7
Pupils answer ten multiple choice questions on cells, underlining the key word in each question before choosing an answer.
    Blwyddyn 8
Pupils read an infographic about energy use at home and answer short questions by finding the right part of it.
    Blwyddyn 9
Pupils answer short answer questions on an unseen infographic about recycling where they are not told where to look, and highlight the evidence they used.

    • Rwy'n gallu defnyddio ystod o strategaethau er mwyn dod o hyd i wybodaeth, e.e. cip ddarllen (sgimio) am yr hanfodion, llithr ddarllen (sganio) am fanylion.

    • Rwy'n gallu darllen yn fanwl, gan adnabod a nodi nodweddion testunau, e.e. cyflwyniad, dilyniant, darluniau, ffurfioldeb, geirfa allweddol.

    Cam cynnydd 4
    • Rwy'n gallu defnyddio ystod o strategaethau, e.e. darllen cyflym, darllen agos, anodi, rhagfynegi, i gip ddarllen (sgimio) testunau i gael yr hanfodion, y syniadau a’r themâu allweddol, a’u llithr ddarllen (sganio) am wybodaeth fanwl.

  2. Finding key facts in secondary sources

Asesu: Mewn gwaith cwrs (asesiad di-arholiad)

In the Unit 2 enquiries learners find scientific information from a book, website, worksheet or video, pick out key facts or data and present them in lists or tables. They begin to judge whether the information looks valid or whether something does not fit.

    Llythrennedd: Deall, ymateb a dadansoddi

    Paratoi disgyblion

    Blwyddyn 7
Pupils read a one page leaflet on composting and list three key facts in their own words.
    Blwyddyn 8
Pupils watch a short video and read a web page on water saving, then make a table of the facts each one gives.
    Blwyddyn 9
Pupils compare two sources on air pollution, pick out the key data from each and explain which one they trust more and why.

    • Rwy'n gallu dangos fy mod yn deall y prif syniadau a manylion pwysig mewn gwahanol destunau ar yr un pwnc a'u defnyddio.

    • Rwy'n gallu defnyddio ffynonellau cyfeirio/digidol i ddewis, crynhoi a chyfuno gwybodaeth, gan gyfeirio atyn nhw fel y bo'n briodol.

    Cam cynnydd 4
    • Rwy'n gallu gwerthuso defnyddioldeb a dibynadwyedd testunau.

    • Rwy'n gallu ymchwilio i amrywiaeth eang o ffynonellau cyfeirio a digidol er mwyn datblygu dealltwriaeth lawn o bwnc neu fater.

  3. Reading health messages and media reports critically

Asesu: Mewn gwaith cwrs (asesiad di-arholiad)

Unit 3 covers food labels and traffic light labels, public health messages such as catch it, bin it, kill it, and media coverage of vaccine safety, where learners must be aware that some reports are not scientifically accurate. Learners need to tell evidence from opinion.

Llythrennedd: Deall, ymateb a dadansoddi, Strategaethau darllen

    Paratoi disgyblion

    Blwyddyn 7
Pupils read the front of three cereal packets and label each claim as a fact or an opinion.
    Blwyddyn 8
Pupils compare a public health poster with a newspaper headline about germs and explain which message is backed by evidence.
    Blwyddyn 9
Pupils read two short articles about a vaccine, highlight facts and opinions in different colours and write which article is more scientifically accurate and why.
